My Letter to the Director-General, ICAR, New Delhi
Through: Proper channel; Sub: Permission to epidemiologically re-investigate and analyse biological and environmental data in the context of buffalo mortality outbreak at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal killing almost four dozens of the precious elite animals, reg.
Respected Sir,
I request you to kindly permit me to epidemiologically re-investigate and analyse biological and environmental data to understand the disease/ death cause and its origin in the context of buffalo mortality outbreak at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal killing almost four dozens of the precious elite animals recently in 2nd and 3rd week of September 2019, please. Three teams, ICAR-NDRI Karnal, ICAR-IVRI Izzatnagar and LUVAS Hissar could not tell the cause of mortality even after 10 days of investigation and put forward several biologically non-plausible theories of buffalo mortality. I feel that a systematic epidemiological investigation may help us to understand the outbreak cause(s) and the origin and the outcome may help in future to avert such incidences in time. The epidemiological investigation is also necessary in the light of reports from media about ICAR-NDRI that only buffaloes died in the outbreak and cows remained unaffected. The facts and analysis may prove supremacy of cattle (cows), if any, over buffaloes in tolerating heat, humidity and feed toxicity as the investigation teams put the theories of aflatoxins in feed, given to cows as well as buffaloes both, and heat and humidity prevailing not only for buffaloes but cattle too, not only in ICAR-NDRI but affecting animals in whole Karnal. However, the truth can be revealed only after proper analysis of biological (pathological investigations, post-mortem reports, livestock records, treatment, feeding, watering, blood profiles, hormonal profiles, and laboratory analysis reports) and environmental data (feed, fodder, environmental temperature, humidity etc) at the affected farm.
Sir, therefore, I request you to kindly permit me to re-investigate and analyse the available data using epidemiological tools and to perform a few more analysis on site to reveal the cause of deaths killing almost four dozens of the precious elite buffaloes in the interest of the Nation and supremacy of our Holy cow in averting the manmade and global warming (environmental) stresses, please.
Sir, in the above context I wrote thrice (copy enclosed) to the Director ICAR-IRI, Izzatnagar to give me an opportunity to be a member of the outbreak investigation team being the head of Division of Epidemiology, but my request was flatly ignored. Sir, I feel that I may do some useful analytical and exploratory epidemiology to reveal some important and still unexplored aspects of the outbreak killing only buffaloes but no cow. Sir, the information revealed through proper onsite epidemiological re-investigation and analysis of the events and data may be valuable for the future of livestock farming in India.
